Changes in Scenica Player 1.4.5 Beta 3
- Fixed an issue where locally initiated playback in Scenica Player would get a “DEMO” watermark when resuming.
- Watermark behavior on TestFlight betas now match the non-beta versions (so it can be properly tested). To discourage production use of the betas, a different, smaller, intermittent watermark with a version number is now present on TestFlight beta versions.
- Removed the “No Content” text visible at startup.
Changes in Scene Maestro 1.4 Beta 23 & Scenica Player 1.4.5 Beta 2
- Scenica Player on iOS, tvOS: auto-resume setting and reset command are now available from the Scenica Player section the device’s Settings app.
- Scenica Player on macOS: Fixed an issue where the countdown number “2” would show up as a “3” on macOS 10.15 and earlier on a non-Retina screen.
- Updated to latest NDI SDK.
Changes in Scene Maestro 1.4 Beta 22 & Scenica Player 1.4.5 Beta 1
- Scenica Player will auto-resume playing the last thing playing when relaunching. This can be turned off in the player options, under the More tab.
- Scene Maestro: Empty Cache button in Player Manager is now called Reset. It’ll delete all media fiels and put the player back in its initial state, with nothing playing. For devices running Gamma Control, it’ll reset the curve to its default setting.
- Note: if you have a scene document open while resetting, this document can reclaim the player immediatly after the reset and cause media to be downloaded again.
- Player Manager had an issue where it wouldn’t work unless there was a document open and in connected state. This is no fixed: no document needs to be open.
Changes in Scene Maestro 1.4 Beta 21 & Scenica Player 1.4.4 Beta 1
- Added support for front and rear camera as input for Scenica Player on iOS, and for built-in camera and external video capture devices for Scenica Player on macOS. This can be controlled remotely from Scene Maestro, but the video feed is kept local to the player and is not available on Scene Maestro, which displays a gray area instead.
- Added support for thermal state monitoring in Scene Maestro. Thermal state is visible in the player lists. There are four states: nominal (no icon), fair (blue thermometer icon), serious (yellow thermometer icon), critical (red thermometer icon).
Changes in Scene Maestro 1.4 Beta 20
- Concurrent file transfers are now limited to 8 at a time and will not make the user interface unresponsive like in 1.4b19.
- Fixed an issue where tight refresh intervals could cause players on a network to blink between offline and online state when network conditions are not optimal or when there are too many players.
Changes in Scene Maestro 1.4 Beta 19
- Transferring files sequentially to a big number of players no longer results in an explosion of the number of threads.
Changes in Scenica Player 1.4.3 Beta 3
- Scenica Player for Mac: fixed an issue where the mouse pointer was not always hidden at launch.
- Updated to latest NDI SDK.
Changes in Scene Maestro 1.4 Beta 18 & Scenica Player 1.4.3 Beta 2
- Performing a cue when the destination slide is already active will now rewind its base layer instead of doing nothing.
- When deleting a group, cues which were only present in that group were not removed from the list of cues, despite the cue no longer existing. Fixed.
- Fixed an issue where some 10-bit video files would not show up properly on Apple TV 4K (2022 model).
- Scenica Player for Mac: fixed issue with mouse pointer staying visible in full screen mode after closing the Options panel.
Changes in Scene Maestro 1.4 Beta 17 & Scenica Player 1.4.3 Beta 1
- Scenica Player for Mac: Reduced memory consumption when displaying the same content on more than one screen (or more than one window).
- Scene Maestro: moving three sides of a layer’s rectangle box would blank out the canvas in Scene Maestro while the layer remains selected.
- Improved performance when adding media files and undoing changes in Scene Maestro.
Changes in Scene Maestro 1.4 Beta 16 & Scenica Player 1.4.2 Beta 1
- File transfers were not working correctly on networks where hostname resolution is unreliable. Previously, transferring files to the players was relying on mDNS or DNS-based hostname resolution: this dependency has been removed.
- Performing a cue will select it in the slide list (if present in the slide list of the selected group).
- Fixed issue with text fields in the Color Intensity section not displaying correct number and not accepting new input.
- Fixed an issue where dragging an overlay layer to in the base section would produce a blank base layer in Scene Maestro.
- Fixed an issue where undoing the deletion of a base layer, or a move from a base layer to an overlay layer, would restore a blank slide instead of the intended slide.
- Fixed an issue where deleting layers and slides and then undoing would fail because the media has been permanently discarded.
- Scene Maestro will now save thumbnails as part of the document instead of regenerating them every time the document is opened.
- Using Scenica Player to choose an image file or an image URL would result in a blank screen. Fixed.
- Some in and out marks problems in Scene Maestro appears to be fixed (unsure which changes in code would have done that).
- Rectangle box for layers is no longer varying per slide: same rectangle is used on all slides.
- Overlay layer visibility is no longer tied to players; visibility for an overlay is the same for all players.
- Fixed an issue where opening an NDI stream would cause Scenica Player to crash.
Changes in Scene Maestro 1.4 Beta 15 & Scenica Player 1.4.1 Beta 3
- Fixed issue where newly added player wouldn’t show up as online in Scene Maestro.
- Fixed an issue where video layers could appear blank (all black) after loading the file on a player (fixed for real this time).
- Fixed an issue where a blur with the cropped option could cause the image to be cropped using the wrong rectangle.
- Fixed an issue where a layer with a rotated orientation can be oddly cropped.
Changes in Scene Maestro 1.4 Beta 14
& Scenica Player 1.4.1 Beta 2
- Fixed an issue where still images were slowing down rendering because they were decoded needlessly at each render pass.
- Fixed an issue where video layers could appear blank after loading the file on a player.
- Fixed an issue in Scene Maestro where a closed document wouldn’t be unloaded from memory and could be continue playing (decoding video, emitting sounds).
Changes in Scene Maestro 1.4 Beta 13
& Scenica Player 1.4.1 Beta 1
- Added help buttons in the inspector describing each setting.
- Changing Top-Left-Bottom-Right to X-Y-Width-Height when defining values for rectangle boxes in the inspector.
- Fixed an issue where Player Manager was misreporting the version of players.
- Fixed: numeric values in some fields in the inspector were not formatted correctly
- With multiple documents open at the same time, removed the behavior of turning automatically the document online when it becomes becomes frontmost. This was causing issues when downloads were in progress and you had multiple documents online at the same time.
- Fixed important performance and networking issues. Details:
- Fixed an issue where some UDP broadcast packets were too big and dropped. This can still happen, but broadcasted messages are now supplemented by HTTP requests above a size threshold in case the broadcast is dropped.
- Scenica Player HTTP endpoints could shut down on iOS and tvOS when the app goes to sleep, preventing network messages above a certain size from reaching the players. This also prevented interactions with players from Player Manager.
- Messages between Scene Maestro and Scenica Player are compressed to reduce network traffic, but a bug in the decompressor was corrupting and dropping messages when above a certain size threshold.
- Significantly improved performance of parsing messages so Players could read long lists of content without causing message-level timeouts and unnecessary retries from Scene Maestro (and repeated retries that had the same issues). This could cause problems keeping the network link alive.
- Image loading could hang the app (Scene Maestro & Scenica Player) when there are too many images or decoding is slow due to the file format. This could also cause problems keeping the network link alive. This has been improved a lot, but slow-to-decode file formats (HEIF!) can still cause some slowdowns.
- Layers on players were sometime prepared before media files were actually transferred, resulting in layers appearing blank or missing.
- If a Scene Maestro document had no overlays, players could still try to try to download media for overlay layers from a previously loaded document.
- Removed redundant work performed by Scene Maestro when shuffling layer visibility, also causing redundant network traffic.
- Fixed an interoperability issue between Scenica Player 1.4 and Scene Maestro 1.3 where margins wouldn’t work.
Changes in 1.4 Beta 12
- Fixed an issue where downscaling could linger after disabling blur if there was a leftover blur radius setting.
- Audio wasn’t muted when the blank or ID screen was active. Fixed.
- When switching slide while the player is muted, you would get an audio glitch if the video had noticeable audio during its first fraction of a second.
- Play/pause is now linked for all the base layers of a slide.
- Next Slide setting for base layers was ignored. Now fixed so you can chain slides together.
- Fixed an issue where player orientation would only rotate the image without adjusting the aspect ratio when rotated.
- On devices supporting screen brightness adjustment, auto-dim is now disabled on the identification screen.
Changes in 1.4 Beta 11
- Small change to the activation system on Mac: if you were using a previous 1.4 beta, you should deactivate Scene Maestro and Scenica Player before updating, and reactivate afterwards. Otherwise there’s some chance the license will get stuck after the update (let me know if that happens so I can fix it).
- Fixed an issue in Maestro where newly added or moved layers would sometime show the wrong media in the thumbnail or canvas.
- Fixed an issue in Maestro where reordering players would not immediately reorder them on the grid.
- Experiment: rearranged buttons in the toolbar: rewind is now on the right side, the freeze (snowflake) button has been changed to a pause button, and ID (#) has been moved to the left.
- Updated to latest NDI SDK.
Changes in 1.4 Beta 10
- Fixed an activation issue that could occur with some network settings.
- Fixed player layout “fill screen” which was showing up as a blank canvas.

- Undo was not working correctly for some layer settings. Fixed.
- Some media files could be lost when renaming or moving a scene document from within Scene Maestro. Fixed.
- Control-clicking a layer often did not bring the context menu. Fixed.
Changes in 1.4 Beta 8
- Fixing issue where command-escape for hiding Scenica Player (Mac) in full screen mode wouldn’t work.
- Changing the playback settings below the canvas now affect all the selected layers (previously, this was only for the first selected layer)..
- Small change to the licensing system that should barely be noticeable: when you unlock this new version of Scene Maestro or Scenica Player, this will no longer unlock previous versions of the same app running on the same device. But unlocking from a previous version will carry on to 1.4 and let the two apps run.
Changes in 1.4 Beta 7
- Added context menus (right click) for player, layer, and slide lists in documents, as well as the list of players in Player Manager.
- Enabled multiple selection in layer and slide columns, and in the canvas.
- Fixed an issue introduce in beta 6 where shuffle (for layer visibility) was broken.

- ID/Blank tracks were broken in last beta. Fixed.
- Fixed a server side issue that would make it difficult in Player Manager to detach a player from an account.
- Fixed a mistake where changing the brightness of a Mac screen from Scene Maestro would only work when Scenica Player was in windowed mode. Now it’s the reverse: it only works when in full screen mode, as intended.
- Fixing issues manipulating device brightness for a group.
- Adjusting of player’s device brightness is disabled by default for new documents.
- Multiple selection: can now select multiple layers and multiple slides simultaneously, but only the first selected item are affected in inspector and playback controls (work in progress).

- Applying Green/Blue Keying to a layer will sometime cause layers below to stretch their edges and cover everything.
- Player windows independently download the same file (Mac Player).
- Moving overlay layers to the base layer will cause issues (preview and canvas not showing the correct things until the document is reloaded, or you switch group).
- Deleting a player should highlight the next or previous one.

Changes in 1.4 beta 6
- Renamed “screen” to “player” in Scene Maestro documents. The first column is the player list now, and the “Player” inspector replaces the “Screen” inspector.

- Scenica Player for Mac:
- With a multi-monitor setup, Scenica Player for Mac will now make available every screens a separate player.
- New “windowed” mode for Scenica Player for Mac, where you can create an unlimited number of player windows and move them around.

- New document format will not open in earlier versions of Scene Maestro, preventing accidental corruption.
- Changed the network protocol to be more efficient when making small changes to the document. Some compatibility is preserved with 1.3 and earlier, but earlier 1.4 betas will not work with Scene Maestro 1.4 beta 5.
- Player response when hitting the per-layer play and pause buttons should be improved.
- The rewind all button at the top of the window no longer change the current slide: it’ll keep the current slide active and rewind all the layers.
- Now choosing automatically the relevant inspector when selecting a group, screen, layer, slide, or cue.

- When adding a cue, you can add a new one, or add an existing one from another group (if not already added to the current group).
- Deleting a cue from the list of slides in every groups also makes the cue truly disappear; it will no longer be shown in the toolbar or anywhere.
- Added a button in the toolbar to show the list of cues globally (all groups) for the document. Cues can be reordered (to chose how they appear in the toolbar) and deleted (from every group) from the popover. This is the same list that was previously in the Cues inspector.
- The Cues inspector no longer has a list of cues. Select a cue from the slide list to edit it in the inspector.

- Player Manager in Scene Maestro can now unlock players using a Scenica Account, and detach them from the account.
- Scene Maestro will now prompt before upgrading documents from the previous format.
- Deleting a slide in Scene Maestro will select the next slide (or previous when deleting the last one), instead of going back to the top of the list.

- Fixed issues where NDI connections were created wastefully. Multiple layers referring to the same NDI source will share the same connection now.
- Updated to latest NDI SDK.
Notes and known issues
- The current way to add layers need to be revisited in a future beta. Select a layer in the layer list, use the + button to add a slide and a layer will be added instead. Drag the layer where you want int he list.
- Layout boxes in canvas for layers and screens are sometime unmovable
- Scenica Player will sometime freeze and display a blank screen after being reattached to a screen the screen inspector in Scene Maestro.
- Orientation at the group/screen level is not functioning properly yet.
- Thumbnail content is not sized properly after a change in screen orientation.
- Player Manager won’t see any player in the window unless a document is opened (and has network active)
- A video delay above 1000ms causes the ID screen to show up on players when starting playback.
- Lack of snapping to edges when resizing layer boxes makes it difficult to align things properly.
- Margin and layer boxes may have resize handles that are unmovable (when inherited or using Fill Screen/Fill Canvas settings.

- A document with no cues leave some void in title bar between the rewind and play buttons.
Changes in 1.4 Beta 1
- Groups can have overlay layers. Overlay layers are global to the group they belong to but visibility is defined on a per-screen and per-slide basis.
- Slides can have multiple base layers, but only one is visible at a time for a given screen.
- Tracks have been replaced by Cues. Instead of slides belonging to a track, cues are inserted in the slide list. Not all groups need to respond to all cues. If a cue is not in the slide list for a given group, it won’t affect that group. To add a cue, drag it from the Cues inspector to just above the slide you want it to trigger.
- Remote Maestro let you trigger cues from a REST API (using HTTP POST requests). See Networking preferences.
- Thumbnail now show a live preview of NDI streams.

- Added battery level indicator for players with a battery (iPad, iPhone, Mac).
- Slide inspector was renamed to Layer inspector and now inspect layer properties.
- Scenica Players will now keep previously transferred files in cache across restarts. You can wipe the cache and force players to reload everything using the reload button in the Group/Screen inspector.
Notes and known issues
- Important: There is a threshold where too many slides and/or layers in a group will cause Scene Maestro to be unable to synchronize changes made to slides and layers. (Threshold is in bytes of data, not number of slides or layers.)
- The current way to add layers need to be revisited in a future beta. Select a layer in the layer list, use the + button to add a slide and a layer will be added instead. Drag the layer where you want int he list.
- A layer that was just added will have its box set to the full size of the canvas, and might not be initially visible. Make it visible, and resize it to something smaller.
- How visibility works for layers and screens needs to be improved. You might have to select each screen to toggle the visibility of a layer everywhere,
- How geometry works for layers boxes and screen margins will be revisited in a future beta.
- Lack of snapping to edges when resizing layer boxes makes it difficult to align things properly.
- Settings from the Content section of the Group/Screen inspector are not working properly in this beta. You can use the Content section in the Layer inspector (independent for each layer, including slide base layers).
- Video Delay setting is ineffective in this beta.
- There is no way to remove a cue from the slide list other than removing it globally from the document using the Cues inspector.
- Each NDI overlay layer will create its own connection. This wastes bandwidth.
- NDI connections are sometime created in excess while editing and you might end up with 20 open connections to the same stream, which might cause issues. This will be fixed in a future beta.
- Thumbnail content is not sized properly in some circumstances.
- Player Manager won’t see any player in the window unless a document is opened (and has network active)
- Player Manager: unlocking and detaching players from an account is not working in this beta.
